🇨🇦 CAREERS IN CANADA: SECURITY GUARD

Interested in working as a Security Guard in Canada? This career can be a good opportunity for newcomers and anyone looking to build experience in the security and protective services sector.

1. What does a Security Guard do?

Security Guards help protect people, property, and businesses. Depending on the position, duties may include:

• Monitoring CCTV and alarm systems
• Controlling access to buildings and restricted areas
• Patrolling properties and identifying safety or security risks
• Responding to incidents and emergencies
• Maintaining security logs and writing incident reports
• Enforcing site rules and procedures
• Providing customer service and assisting visitors
• Contacting police, fire, or emergency services when required

2. What are the requirements in Canada?

Security licensing is regulated by each province or territory, so requirements can vary across Canada.

In Alberta, individuals who work as security guards must obtain a Security Service Worker Licence.

Generally, applicants must:
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be eligible to work in Canada
• Complete the required security training
• Successfully pass the required provincial exam
• Complete the application process
• Meet the required background-check and suitability requirements
• Provide the required identification and documentation

Additional requirements may apply depending on the position or employer.

3. What licence do you need in Alberta?

For security guard work in Alberta, the main licence is the Security Service Worker Licence.

To obtain this licence, applicants generally need to complete the approved Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) program and pass the provincial exam.

The basic training covers important areas such as:

• The role and responsibilities of a security professional
• Legal authorities and limitations
• Communication and professionalism
• Documentation and report writing
• Emergency response
• Workplace safety
• Ethics and professional conduct

The Security Service Worker Licence is different from other security-related licences. For example, individuals working as private investigators or in certain specialized security roles may have different licensing requirements.

4. What skills are important?

A successful Security Guard should have:

• Strong observation skills
• Effective communication skills
• Customer-service skills
• Ability to remain calm under pressure
• Strong report-writing and documentation skills
• Understanding of legal boundaries and responsibilities
• Reliability and professionalism

5. Useful Official Resources

• Government of Alberta – Security Services and Investigator Program
• Government of Alberta – Security Service Worker licensing requirements
• Government of Canada – Job Bank: Security Guards and related occupations
• Alberta Security Services and Investigators Act and related regulations

Before applying for security jobs in Alberta, make sure you understand the provincial licensing requirements. Having the correct licence is an essential first step toward working legally as a Security Guard.

Your career in Canada starts with knowing the requirements. 🇨🇦
