When hiring a plumber, it helps to understand the basics of accreditation so you can check if they’re qualified for the work they’re doing.
Heat pumps must always be installed by a plumber registered or licensed with the VBA, or an apprentice plumber under direct supervision.
Some installations may require a plumber accredited in specific classes of plumbing work.
For example:
• heat pump water heater installation that involves removing a gas water heater must be carried out by a plumber accredited in gasfitting
• installation of a self-contained water heater requires accreditation in water supply
• connection of refrigerant pipework requires accreditation in both water supply and refrigerated air conditioning.
Always check a plumber’s qualifications using the Find a Practitioner tool at our website.
