Hiring affects much more than the number of people on the team.
There is the immediate question of what work needs to be done, but also the structure of the role, the business’s financial capacity, payroll, employment foundations, onboarding and the time required to support someone once they arrive.
That is why a useful hiring conversation often crosses several areas of the business.
Start by defining the actual pressure you are trying to solve. Is demand genuinely increasing? Is the current team at capacity? Is work sitting with the wrong person? Or is an inefficient process making the workload larger than it needs to be?
Then look at the decision commercially. What will the role require from the business over time, and what information do you have to support that decision?
From there, the HR and payroll foundations need to match the arrangement being created.
Good decisions become easier when the owner can see the connected picture before committing.
General information only. Advice should be considered in the context of your individual business and employment circumstances.
Save this for the next time your business starts saying, “We need another person.”
