Today is World Environment Day, and we’ve got good news.

“Apprenticeships in the clean energy sector are on the rise,” said the Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy.

In the last three years, more apprentices have chosen to follow a career pathway in energy industries such as solar, automotive and smart technology.

The Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) has two streams, with one focusing on new energy apprenticeships. The initiative offers incentives to support people training in the sector and has helped attract and retain apprentices.

“The new energy stream of the program has seen a strong retention rate, with 85 per cent of apprentices remaining in their apprenticeship after the first year, signalling improved completion rates and delivering a major boost for Australia’s renewable workforce,” said the Minister.

“In the last six months of the program, more than a quarter of new energy commencements have occurred, representing significant growth in interest in clean energy apprenticeships as Australia continues its transition to renewable energy.”

As the demand for green skills continues to grow, more career pathways are opening for those who want to use their work and knowledge to support Australia’s sustainability goals.

Best of all, these skills can be built through tailored apprenticeship programs, with access to incentives and support to help complete training.

If you want to know more about these programs, drop “new energy” in the comments and we’ll send you more information.

Watching our team complete another cycle with Mas is a privilege. Our story is written by them, and they help shape who we are.

How do you think of Mas without Kate Massie, who has been with us for 19 years? As a Senior Apprenticeship Consultant, she has touched thousands and thousands of lives across Tassie.

“Safe to say she’s probably signed up half of Hobart along the way!” said Kelly Penman, our Regional Manager.

“Over that time, she has seen the full life cycle of apprenticeships evolve and has played a role in shaping thousands of careers, having personally completed around 9,000 sign ups.”

Our Queensland team would not be the same without Trish Blake, Key Account Manager, who has been with us for 10 years.

“We are lucky to have you and couldn’t do what we do without your support for our clients, apprentices and the Mas team. Thank you for everything you do!!” said Juliet Stewart, our State Manager for QLD.

And to make it extra special, Julie Iles has reached the five-year milestone with Mas, contributing to the continued growth of our Tassie team and the Launceston side of the island.

“Grateful for the opportunities, the people I’ve met, and the work I get to do every day,” said Julie.

Our national team is so proud to celebrate these milestones and all the incredible work you’ve done over the years. Your expertise, commitment and hard work have helped build our brand and made Mas what it is today.

Thank you for everything you three have done.

Now it’s time to raise a glass to this trio and share your appreciation in the comments.

She loves animals, running and bike rides, and has recently learnt how to scuba dive and kayak. She also brings a wealth of experience across different industries to our team.

Let’s introduce our new Business Growth Consultant, Kay Russell.

Before joining us, Kay was already working in the training sector as a Business Development Manager for a GTO, while also mentoring apprentices and trainees.

This space isn’t new to her. Back in the day, she was a hairdressing apprentice, which led her to become a business owner and later an educator in the field. Her experience also spans retail, travel, hospitality, aviation, insurance and medical, across a range of roles and leadership positions.

“It is all in my DNA. I have experienced these industries from being an apprentice and trainee, to an employer and business owner, and even starting fresh in a new industry as an adult learner,” she said.

As part of our team, Kay is ready to support clients with their goals, whether it’s a school leaver looking for their first job or an employer aiming to grow their workforce.

“Helping people become happy and successful gives me tingles. Success looks different for everyone, and part of what I do is understand what that means for each person and help them get there,” she said.

Learning, helping others and trying new things drive her in and outside of work. “Being part of someone’s ‘aha’ moment and getting those good feels,” she said.

That mindset led her to recently learn scuba diving and kayaking. Staying active and looking after her health is important to her. “Definitely not perfect, but very motivated,” she added.

Her biggest love, though, is animals, from dogs and cats to horses and even sloths, and the list goes on.

“I wanted a miniature donkey, so my partner bought me a kitten and called him Donkey,” she said.

Join us in giving Kay a big welcome below.

A Throwback Thursday during National Reconciliation Week is a great opportunity to recognise organisations that promote employment and training programs across Australia.

One of them is the Gunggandji-Mandingalbay Yidinji Peoples PBC (GMYPPBC), which won the Gold Award for Small Employer of the Year at the 2024 Australian Training Awards.

This charity and not for profit organisation is based in Yarrabah, the largest discrete Aboriginal community in Australia. Among its initiatives is a First Nations ranger program, giving people the opportunity to build skills through environmental management activities.

Since 2021, the Mas team has supported their Reef Assist Ranger Program, which focuses on building a sustainable, environmentally driven economy for the community and the GMYPPBC Trustee Area.

Their training programs have been so successful that last year one of their apprentices was also recognised as a runner up for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the Australian Training Awards.

Dion Sands joined GMYPPBC and its ranger program in 2023, giving him the opportunity to complete a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management through TAFE Queensland.

This training helped him build the skills to start coordinating tours that share Gunggandji culture and to step into his role as Traditional Owner Program Coordinator with Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef.

As we take part in Reconciliation Week and learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, we invite you to get to know more about GMYPPBC and their work.

It is also a great reminder that you have until Wednesday 3 June to submit your nomination for the 2026 Australian Training Awards and be the next winner: https://bit.ly/4uAhcye

Two reasons why the next seven days are really important for Australians.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week (NRW), which takes place across the country until Wednesday, June 3. This is also the same day nominations for the Australian Training Awards close.

As NRW is a time for all Australians to learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, we’re taking the opportunity to look back at the stories of two of our apprentices who were recognised at the Australian Training Awards.

Pakana man Harley Mansell and Gunggandji man Dion Sands became the ATT’s 2024 and 2025 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year. Swipe the carousel to read more about their achievements.

It is always an honour to see our clients reaching their career goals while making a difference in their communities.

That's why we want to encourage and remind you to share the stories of apprentices, trainees, students, employers or any organisation doing great things in their workplace, industry and community.

You have until June 3, 11:59pm (AEST) to send your nomination here: https://bit.ly/4uAhcye

After 14 years as Group CEO of IntoWork, Poul Bottern has recently tendered his resignation, effective from the end of June this year, as he pursues other business interests.

The Board of IntoWork would like to acknowledge and thank Poul for his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication, expertise and strategic guidance over the past 14 years, building IntoWork into the large, respected and leading provider in the sector it is today.

Given Poul’s focus over the coming weeks to ensure an effective handover including working with our Boards on governance matters, we have appointed Christine Zechowski as Acting Group CEO, whilst we recruit for an ongoing Group CEO. Christine has been with IntoWork for many years, including as Group Chief Commercial Officer. She is joined by a strong Executive team and experienced CEOs, so IntoWork is in good hands.

In communicating with Staff, Poul noted: It has been a pleasure and privilege to lead IntoWork with the Board and Leadership Team. My highlights have been many, from our growth of 125 to 2,600 skilled staff, expansion across Australia and New Zealand, and increasing services for the most marginalised and disadvantaged members of our community. However, the largest highlight for me has been the pleasure of working with the fantastic group of people within IntoWork as well as our business partners and the broader sectors we engage with!

We thank Poul for his significant contribution and wish him and his family the very best for the future.
