Safe at Home, Safe at Work Domestic violence workplace rights and entitlements

The Safe at Home, Safe at Work Project, is a project of the Centre for Gender Related Violence Studies at UNSW which is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations to reduce the impact of family violence on workers by achieving better workplace rights that support them to stay safely in their jobs and in their homes.

The Safe at Home, Safe at Work Project is officially closed. Our latest report card is that by June 2013:

* Over 1,200,000 Australian workers are protected by domestic violence entitlements

*Fair Work Act amendments have extended the right to request flexible work arrangements due to domestic violence

*Reporting requirements have been legislated for certain workplaces to report on domestic violence policies, strategies and measures to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency

*Work in progress is the extension of anti-discrimination protection to workers experiencing domestic violence.

Good international links are paying off as the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women (Western University, Ontario) and the Canadian Labour Congress are planning a partnership which will produce a survey similar to the one conducted in Australia.

The Fair Work amendment may leave workers experiencing domestic violence exposed

Safe at Home, Safe at Work's submission to the Senate Inquiry in April has recommended that government add to the new 'right to request flexible work arrangements' an appeal process if requests are denied, and measures to protect against adverse action, given that employees may become vulnerable once they have disclosed their circumstances in the workplace.
