Behind the Boots:
Hunter’s Journey
In 2023 Hunter was working the checkout at Woolies when Jon Felton , one of our veteran mentors, struck up a simple conversation that changed everything. Jon saw something in him and invited him into Deploy for a chat about breaking into industry.
Hunter didn’t waste the moment.
He came to us with no licence, no skills, no industry knowledge — but he showed up with a solid attitude, quiet, respectful and a genuine willingness to learn. That’s all we needed. He earned his place in our Industry Cogs program and never looked back.
Hunter put in the work. Every task was new, every tool unfamiliar, but he gave 100% and pushed through. He graduated with entry level tickets, confidence, and momentum. We placed him with HRS as a casual yardie to build experience, and he stuck with it for over a year. In that time he got his drivers licence and knocked over a basic scaffold ticket.
A few months ago, he called me. He wanted more, he was ready to progress. He started applying for site roles. His first shot at mining got him to medical, but he missed the weight requirement. It stung — but he didn’t crack. He reset, hit the gym, and got himself on a health plan and worked on improving is fitness.
Then he applied for a production role at BSL and again asked for our support. Of course we backed him.
Last month I got a message: “I got the job”.
He’s excited to be starting the new year in his new role, - through determination and planning he is exactly where he is meant to be.
These are the stories that matter — not overnight success, but steady, stubborn progress.
‘The spark you see in someone when they walk through the doors at Deploy… and the fire they build themselves grows into a steady flame.’
Congratulations, Hunter. You earned every bit of this.
