sometimes it's nice to remind yourself what your clients think of you...

from Jon with thanks

"Ridiculously professional" is the phrase that comes to mind when I think about Kathryn. I initially met Kathryn while scanning the market for a new role. Once we met, she interviewed me and we began our professional relationship. She immediately thought she could assist me and had a very specific role in mind that would suit my experience and qualifications. We then collaborated to form a plan and agreed, with laser precision, how we would move forward. Within a few months, the role was mine. Furthering that experience, I have worked with Kathryn while recruiting the last three employees we hired at Bay Technologies. Her connections, her network, the ability to hone in on the talent that we needed seemed effortless for her. I often reflect on where the organisation would be without the quality of candidates she has put before us. Her ability to ask the questions and challenge the management team to get the clearest requirements we really needed surprised me and caused me to wonder why she isn't working with the largest of the largest recruiting companies. After getting to know her it became clear why she chooses to work for herself. She isn't the kind of person to be a "yes" person. She has clear objectives, clear paths to success and the agility it brings is clearly why she floats to the top with the cream. I would never hesitate to recommend her; completely happy to give clear examples of her amazing talent and until she decided to call it a day, user her for every single recruiting process we might navigate in the future. Experienced, intelligent, professional and responsive are the four attributes she has polished to become a leader in her field.

Dev Ops Engineer - Brisbane
See, we have this crazy, thrill-seeking goal to climb from a small company that has been working in the government space for almost 20 years to double our revenue in the next 18 months. We aspire to reach our target by Dec 2018.
Our two niche software products do extraordinary things. The first is workflow management software that assists our clients to manage ministerial and executive correspondence. The second is an investigation management and compliance application. Neither are very sexy, but they are strong, dependable, and proven. We like to think of ourselves in third person, the person that has accumulated more domain experience in our niche markets than anyone else. We eat this stuff like protein bars and that squishy goo as we hike towards the summit.
This year we’ve been successful beyond our projections and now need to move our existing legacy “on-premise” mindset to “the cloud” to handle an avalanche of potential customers.
Recently the shift in government mindset from hosting application on-premise, now heading to the cloud, has been quite a shake-up. It has required us to self-arrest; diving into hosting our applications in the cloud, re: IaaS and PaaS (and eventually SaaS), mostly private secure hosting. Our apps are currently hosted in AWS, Azure, CITEC and other GITC approved hosting companies. Will this change? Probably, but only slightly. We are firming up some relationships with the people we want to share a campsite with; others ready to take on the mountain.
Our ropes are made by Microsoft. We use their products, technologies and drink the cool aid. Partnered with them for over 20 years, we have had some big wins including receiving a few MS Global Awards for our products.
We want the right person to be part of the reason things go so smooth from here; our expert abseiler, rappeller, the person that makes sure we don’t fall flat on our faces. The Sherpa who always has the oxygen mask and slaps it on our face before we pass out. You lead from the back and have a clear direction on how to get there… and let NOTHING stand in your way.
You could be the one to take us to the top.
We need a DevOps engineer with strong cloud services experience. By the time you come on board, we should be finished with our ISO 27001 and CSA Star certifications. This process has many controls that will be in place, we need your help to manage them, ensure they are working like your most trusted carabiner. We need a strong personality to ensure the SLA’s we have with our customers are not missed, strong reporting and process oriented trailblazing. You can sniff our capacity bottlenecks before they block our route and if they pop up, think on your feet and scale to ensure they are minimised.
Regarded highly if you have the experience and desire to manage one of our products.
In this role, you’ll work collaboratively with software engineering to deploy and operate our systems. Help automate and streamline our operations and processes. Build and maintain tools for deployment, monitoring and operations. And troubleshoot and resolve issues in our dev, test and production environments.
In our opinion DevOps is the culmination of behaviours, community, culture and technical talent colliding to improve user experience through tools, technologies, trust and people, oh, and executing.

Your climbing gear.

• Strong background in Cloud/Datacentre/Infrastructure – You can virtualise anything.. no really, anything.
• Employ effective testing strategies across multiple devices and OS versions to deliver reliable products to our customers.
• Broad technical background – the ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services (experience with Azure is required)
• A scripting Guru – You just ate PowerShell scripts for brekky, eg: Strong experience with MS SQL, blah blah)
• Willingness to admit you are a borderline developer. (C+, ASP.NET, CSS, HTML)
• Knowledge of best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service
• Knowledge of Security controls, Vulnerability scanning (understand how to manage CVE’s and ensure you can translate to the rest of the team)
• Experience with Product Management and the desire to get your feet wet, day 1.
• Network Admin/Sys Admin skills that hold up in a rock slide.
• People Skills, don’t forget the importance of gaining peoples trust and the ability to encourage them to follow you on your journey to the summit.
• Customer Service – It’s not just a department here.
• Someone who cares – just in case of injuries along the way. We don’t want to leave anyone behind.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES
• Deployment Frequency - Boosting deployment frequency has been a powerful motivator for shifts in development practices. The ability to make code changes quickly and easily is a key competitive advantage for any company that needs to deliver new features quickly to customers, and respond to their behaviour.
• Deployment Speed - Frequent code deployment depends in large part on being able to move quickly from committed code to that code running successfully in the production environment.
• Failure Rate – Things fail, sometimes more than we’d like. It’s great to deploy more frequently and quickly, but if changes fail just as frequently, you’ve gained nothing. Failed deployments can take services down, resulting in lost revenue and frustrated customers.
• Time to Recovery - When service does go out, the ability to recover quickly can make a huge difference to business results.
• Happier lives for sysadmins and developers (especially the Technical Director) - Organisations that can deploy changes quickly and reliably are able to introduce new features and improvements in response to the market, and ahead of competitors. Their revenue streams are more dependable, and they can plan better for the future.
ORGANIZATIONAL ALIGNMENT
• Reports to the Technical Director
QUALIFICATIONS
• Four-year college degree from an accredited institution
• Minimum three years of trail blazing and carrying heavy loads to market.
ENVIRONMENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
• This position includes outside travel to customers’ premises
• All prospective employees must pass a background check.
Begin each day from our basecamp.

As if being surrounded by views of the Great Dividing Range against an Azure sky wasn’t awe-inspiring enough, we offer an inspired work place, too.
We are a small team, we have fun, we celebrate the wins and celebrate the losses too (just not as hard). We think our employee value proposition is strong, but only you can be the judge of that.
Intrinsic Factors
Autonomy – Working to goals instead of micro-managed processes; Freedom to try new things and improve existing processes.
Innovative Environment - Exposure to range of environments including Cloud, Hybrid and Standard IT environments.
Competence – Diverse group of multicultural and talented employees that are approachable, keen to share knowledge and team oriented. (India, USA, Columbia, Brazil and Australia)
Task Challenges – Performance Feedback from Managers and Peers (we work to KPI’s)
Functional Factors
Compensation – Opportunity for Performance bonuses and Regular and constant pay periods (Paid on time, every time). Corporate Income Protection Plan included in pay packet. Salary Sacrifice provisions.
Amenities – Fresh Fruit, treats, drinks and sometimes snacks and meals. Corporate Exercise Program offering subsidised gym membership.
Career Growth – Exposure to range of environments and opportunities for career progress
Personal Growth – Training and certification with Microsoft and other market leading vendors, re: HPE, OpenText, Security Vendors, etc.
Symbolic Factors

Image – Our company is a well-known, respected vendor to Government Agencies.
Individual Perception – Low staff turnover and full time permanent role.
Life Style – We offer flexible working conditions (because we know you might have another team at home and may be required to support them from time to time).
Are you up for the challenge?

Jobs typically fill up fast (did I mention we rock?) and we are located in one of Australia’s most desirable metros, BrisVegas.
So, don’t leave us hanging.
Apply today.

Cover letters some really good advice here
copied - from LinkedIn member Adnan Ahmad

Co-Founder and CEO at OWCareers

Countless times have we sat and pondered on the best ways to make a CV, however, it is rare to give enough thought to the cover letter aspect of the application. Cover letters have been underestimated by many applicants simply because its sole purpose has been too hazy to gain it any attention. A cover letter is actually your justification to the employer to state why you are the best for the job. Nowadays, it has become customary to include cover letters in your resume, even online application forums like Auto Job Application working from OWCareers, require you to submit this document. Many of us, however, fail to do justice to this piece of writing. To help you out, here we elaborate on ways to construct a refined cover letter, guaranteed to stand out.

Many websites and tutorials on the web will educate you about the obvious basics such as grammar and sentence structure. Here, however, we will reveal some of the most prime tips. A mistake most applicants make is to simply summarize the entire CV into a paragraph form to suffice as a cover letter. This is wrong. Avoid these repetitions, instead, try to express your personality and the curiosity in your line of work. A better option will be to talk about the history or the major events in the field. This helps you to showcase your knowledge on the subject. Use the topic constructively to highlight your expertise in an interesting and unique fashion.

Another thing to keep in mind is to keep it short and direct. Here, less is gold and half a page, tops, is all you need to get to your employer. Try to skip the introducing details and jump right into the midst of the excitement to captivate your reader from the very start. A cover letter directs nobody. Don't address your writing to anyone in particular as it's hard to predict who will read it. You can start it with a ‘to whom it may concern' for example, or just simply dive into the text directly. Also, introducing yourself in the letter as ‘so and so' is a big no. The only thing this approach will do is not let you get a job.

Even the file format matters. Many companies use PDF, however, some applicants send off their cover letters in .docs or .pages file. The employer does not have time to convert your file and most probably they are not going to bother. The likely outcome of this request is simply ignorance, with the employer moving on to the next option. A waste of a perfectly good application. In the ending, the closing part carries a lot of weight. You need to implement a sentence or two, explaining how your abilities and experience could be a valuable asset to the company and finish off without dragging it too long. This gives the letter an air of professionalism that speaks for itself.

Incorporating these tips into your application of work are bound to help you secure a job faster. Our advice is to create a cover letter tailored to the suggestions in order to stand out in a sea of applications. Not only will you be more visible to the employers, your skill set will also be published, helping to prove your abilities to the recruiters. In order to click, a well-written CV must have a complimenting cover letter. The two together outshine many requests for work and will surely up you several steps towards acquiring your dream job. Believe us, it's worth a try.
