The APA’s first Workforce Census highlights a clear link between workforce shortages and opportunity.

For physios considering a move, regional and rural roles could offer more attractive packages alongside strong demand.

But pay isn’t the only factor, with around 35% of those not planning to stay beyond five years citing burnout.

Pharmacists in Australia could be taking on a much more clinical role.

Expanded scope is already permanent in Queensland, while NSW is moving acute-condition treatment towards permanent practice and the Northern Territory is rolling out treatment for around 21 common conditions.

The key thing? What you can prescribe and treat depends on where you work, with different training and authorisation requirements across each state.

Your NDIS rate and your pay packet are two very different numbers.

The 2026-27 NDIS price limits are out. OTs and speech pathologists can be billed at up to $193.99 an hour, physios $183.99, psychologists $252.99 (up from $232.99) and dietitians $178.99 (down from $188.99).

That figure is the most a provider can charge for an hour of support. Your salary comes out of it, after travel, report writing, cancellations, supervision, admin and super. A big share of a clinician's week is never billable, which is why a rate of around $190 an hour rarely turns into anything like that in wages.

So when you're comparing NDIS roles, ask three things: how you'll be paid (salaried, hourly or contractor), what your billable target is, and what counts towards it.
