Adelaide University Geological Society (AUGS) The Adelaide University Geological Society (AUGS) is a student-run society for people who also love rocks!

If you love social events and career opportunities we’ve got you covered! Welcome to the Adelaide University Geological Society (AUGS) Facebook. We are a student run society associated with the Adelaide University Union (AUU). AUGS is run by 3rd year undergraduate students majoring in Geology, Geophysics and/or Environmental Science. We are dedicated to all geology students and faculty at the University of Adelaide. The aims of the Society are to encourage a social community between students and staff throughout all years, supply financial assistance to students for academic field trips requiring individual financial input and to facilitate through a variety of events, networking with professionals from the resources industry where graduating students will potentially look to gain future employment. AUGS events include many functions throughout the year such as BBQs, quiz nights, pub crawls, sponsors nights and a formal dinner. Afterwards, and at all these events, student attendees have the opportunity to socialise and mingle with potential employers and academics in a relaxed environment drawing on their experience and knowledge. Join the national AMEC team for an evening of discovery and connection at the iconic South Australian Museum.

Venue: South Australian Museum, North Terrace, Adelaide

Cost: Attendance is free, but places are limited

Bringing together industry professionals, emerging talent and geoscience leaders, this special event offers a unique opportunity to connect and celebrate Australia’s mining sector in the inspiring setting of the South Australian Museum.
Members will enjoy exclusive access to explore the museum’s fossil and mineral galleries, take part in an interactive museum quiz, and discover South Australia’s remarkable geological history.
After exploring the galleries, we’ll come together in the Ediacaran Fossils gallery to enjoy canapés and drinks, announce the quiz winner, and hear from:

Measurements, Imputations and Predictions - the distinction matters !

As the barriers to entry for coding disappear, machine learning libraries grow and the availability of digital data increases, the number of applications within geosciences is growing rapidly. Some will survive and prove useful. Others will fail data accuracy objectives and be forgotten. The role of geoscientists in this world will increasingly demand an understanding of the distinction between measurement, imputation and prediction. Mistaking one for the other and relying on the answers without knowing their strengths and shortcomings will lead to problems.
